The treatment experience

A two-phase intensive treatment program.  The first phase involves the application of Cosmelan I, a highly potent de-pigmenting mask. This is applied at the clinic after which you can return home. The mask is not washed off for up to 8-12 hours. The total time depends on your skin type and the amount of hyperpigmentation being treated.

The second phase is the use of the fully prescribed home-care, including the application of the maintenance cream (Cosmelan 2) for the following three months to continue the treatment and maintain results, preventing pigmentation from returning. Consistency is essential to ensure the best results.

  • Avoid any chemical peel or laser procedures three months before your appointment.

    Refrain from waxing or the use of other depilatory products for seven days prior to your treatment.

  • Sun exposure should be avoided. Daily use of Melan 130 SPF pigment control sunscreen is essential.

    Your Skin Specialist will recommend and treatments required post peel.

  • Cosmelan works by removing visible surface pigmentation through deep peeling. By inhibiting a specific type of enzyme (tyrosinase) that is directly involved in the production of melanin, Cosmelan can reduce further melanin production and the discolouration it causes in the skin.

  • Results can be visible as soon as two weeks after treatment, depending on the level of pigmentation.

  • Generally, one treatment will be sufficient, but if your Skin Specialist recommends, treatment can be repeated after 12 months.

  • No, there may be some irritation or discomfort during active peeling, which is treated with the home-care.

  • Two to three days after the treatment is applied, the skin will feel like you have moderate to strong sunburn. Skin shedding, flaking and then peeling will start and is mostly completed within 14 days. As your skin continues to renew, some redness should be expected for 4-6 weeks after treatment. Increased hydration and sunscreen is essential.

  • A consultation with a Skin Specialist is required prior to booking a Cosmelan appointment. It is important to make sure this is the correct chemical peel and treatment for your specific concerns.

    This peel is safe for all skin tones and ethnicities. However it is not suitable for those who have been on Roaccutane in the last six months and have cystic acne, open wounds, infections, rosacea, psoriasis or dermatitis in the area to be treated.

    It is also not recommended for those that are pregnant or nursing.
