Electrolysis

Permanent hair removal for unwanted hair

Electrolysis is a process where a probe is inserted along the hair shaft, treating and permanently destroying the part of the follicle responsible for hair growth. It works on all hair colours and types and is great for anyone where IPL and laser aren’t an option.

Common questions

  • • Avoid shaving at least 5-7 days before the first treatment and waxing/tweezing for 2-3 weeks.

    • Before your appointment, ensure the treatment area is clean and free of makeup, lotions or creams.

    • Depending on the treatment area, paracetamol can be taken beforehand.

    • Make sure you’re hydrated and drink plenty of water before your appointment.

  • • After electrolysis, your skin may be temporarily red, swollen and tender, and there is a possibility of spots occurring.

    • Application of cold compresses is most effective in reducing further irritation and helping skin to recover.

    • Don’t touch or scratch the area treated.

    • Don’t wash or wear makeup on the treated area for 24 hours.

    • Avoid perfumes or alcohol based products that will dry the skin out.

    • Avoid excessive sweating directly after treatment.

    • Wear sunscreen to protect skin from UV rays.

    • Don’t swim in a chlorinated pool for 48 hours after treatment.

  • A fine probe is inserted into each hair follicle, a direct current is applied through the probe. This causes a heat reaction in the tissue surrounding the hair follicle which causes damage to the follicle (thermolysis), preventing further hair growth.

  • Electrolysis doesn’t target hair pigment the way IPL does; rather, it targets the follicle itself. This means people who are not good candidates for IPL can still have effective electrolysis treatment, as it is perfect for those with darker skin or lighter hair.

  • Results depend on the individual and nature of the hair. Due to the different growth cycles of the hair, it takes multiple sessions to treat the hair permanently.

Stubborn hair may also require more treatments before results are achieved. Therefore it is essential that you follow the treatment plan provided for best results.

  • Requirements vary, depending on hair growth and the areas to be treated.

During your consultation, your Skin Specialist will analyse your areas of concern and provide a customised treatment plan.

  • In most cases, one treatment a week is advisable to start, however, your Skin Specialist will let you know as part of your treatment plan.

  • It can be painful depending on your pain tolerance.

  • There is no downtime associated with the treatment.

  • A consultation is required before starting any hair removal treatment on the face. Pursuing the incorrect treatment for you hair type may cause hair to become more difficult to treat.

Doctor’s permission is required for anyone with diabetes or moles with hair.

Treatment is not suitable for anyone who has epilepsy, is pregnant or breastfeeding.
